The Bible

Lesson

The Bible is the inspired Word of God and is His revelation to all people of himself and His plan of salvation.  The word Bible mean “the books”, and it is a collection of 66 books.  There are two division Old Testament and New Testament, testament means covenant or agreement.  The agreement being between God and man.

The Bible was verbally inspired by God which means the Holy Spirit spoke each word to the writers, not just the thoughts or ideas.  The Bible itself even claims to be inspired in that there are over 2500 references in the Bible in which the words “and God said” or equivalent are found.  There are many things the Bible teaches us we call these teachings doctrine.

We learn in 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteous.  Which means it is useful in how we should conduct lives and we use it as measure for our faith and actions.

Psalm 119:160 All your words are true; … tell us the Bible is infallible which means it cannot fail and has no errors.

Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away but my words will never pass away, tells us the Bible will last forever.

Psalm 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you, gives us a reason to memorize Bible verses, which is to protect us against sin.

Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, tells us we gain wisdom by honoring and respecting it as the Word of God.

We should study the Bible often and it even directs to do that in 2 Timothy 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

The Old Testament was written mostly in Hebrew.  The Old Testament is composed of 39 books and is divided into 4 section Law, History, Poetry and Prophets.  It tells of beginning world in Genesis and in other books the laws between God and people and the resolution for sins through the Old Testament Priests making animal sacrifices to God for our sins.

The New Testament was written mostly in Greek and is composed of 27 books and is also divided into 4 sections History, Paul Epistles, General Epistles and Prophecy.  Epistles are letters sent by the apostles and Prophecy is the book of Revelation which is composed almost entirely of prophesies of the future.  The New Testament tells about the life and teachings of Jesus in the first four books called the Gospels which means “Good news”.   The gospels were written Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, of which Matthew and John were two of the twelve disciples.  The book of Hebrews which is part of the general epistles, explains how Jesus is a better mediator between God and man than were the Old Testament Priest and animal sacrifices, which defines the New Testament as the new agreement between God and people.

The Bible was written over a period of about 1600 years by over 40 different people.  The book of Psalms which is found in the middle of the Bible and is mostly a collection of hymns and songs is the longest book.  Psalms contains the longest chapter 119 (176 verses) and the shortest chapter 117 (2 verses).  King David wrote most of the book of Psalms.

God gave us the Bible his holy word, as guide for the salvation of our sins.

Salvation

If you have not accepted Jesus as your savior here is how:

·         Ask God to save us

·         Believe Jesus was raised from the dead

·         Confess and repent of our sins

·         Declare Jesus as Savior and Lord

Pray: God please save me. I believe that Jesus died and was raised from the dead for my salvation.  I am sorry for the bad things I have done. Jesus is my savior and Lord.  Amen.
